Mexican peso stays under 16.95 as traders weigh US data, Iran shift

USD/MXN was last at 16.94, with the dollar index down 0.1% to 98.90 as markets digested US consumer and jobs signals and expectations for Fed commentary.

The Mexican peso held near 10-year highs against the US dollar on Tuesday, keeping the USD/MXN pair below the 16.95 area. FXStreet reported the market last traded around 16.94, with the quote virtually unchanged.

FXStreet said the dollar was weighed by softer Treasury yields that left the DXY, a measure of the greenback versus a basket of currencies, down 0.08% to 98.90. The report also pointed to Mexico’s macro backdrop, citing a current account surplus of $8.9 billion in Q2 2026 after a revised $18.23 billion deficit in Q1.

On the US side, the outlet highlighted mixed incoming data, including a Conference Board Consumer Confidence print that missed estimates while current conditions improved modestly in August and households saw a firmer jobs outlook. It also referenced US housing data with stronger July building permits and an ADP employment change 4-week average that came in below the prior week’s print, alongside a hawkish tone from Boston Fed President Susan Collins.

Looking ahead, FXStreet noted attention on the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge, the Core PCE Price Index, ahead of Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech at Jackson Hole. The report also flagged further scheduled US releases including durable goods orders, GDP, and initial jobless claims, while technical levels suggested USD/MXN rallies could remain capped while the pair stays below nearby moving averages.
