Ethereum proposal would make staking deposits flexible for new keys
The draft would add contract modes that permanently retire the current BLS12-381 deposit onboarding once a later protocol call is activated, while still processing deposits queued before that boundary under the existing rules.
Ethereum developers have opened an early proposal aimed at changing how new validators can enter the network by making the staking deposit system flexible enough to accept future quantum-resistant validator key formats. CryptoSlate reports the draft would also introduce a one-way mechanism to stop new deposits that use today’s BLS format after a later network upgrade activates the retirement step.
The proposal, submitted as pull request #12235 on Aug. 24 and still unmerged as of Aug. 26, would modify Ethereum’s staking deposit contract, which is the entry point that receives prospective validators’ funds and credential data. Under the current design, the contract expects fixed BLS12-381 public keys and signatures, while the draft adds a scheme identifier and variable-length fields for the public key and credential metadata, each capped at 8,192 bytes.
Rather than checking new cryptography at the contract level, the draft would treat non-BLS credentials as opaque data, passing the bytes onward so the consensus layer can decide whether the credential is valid. The proposal lays out three contract modes, disabled, BLS enabled, and BLS retired, with transitions that only move forward.
Ethereum says activating the deposit path would require a coordinated execution- and consensus-layer fork. The proposal also notes that a separate future credential-scheme update would still be needed to define signature validation and other operational rules, including validator-state representation, top-ups, duplicate handling, uniqueness, and key replacement. CryptoSlate reports Ethereum’s roadmap pairs a post-quantum validator signature approach with leanXMSS and leanVM milestones, while stating no quantum computer can threaten its cryptography.
