Indiana storms kill seven, displace 1,000 and leave hundreds of thousands without power

HousingWire reports severe storms in northwest Indiana have killed seven people, displaced about 1,000 residents, and left 374,500 customers without power.

A Gary, Indiana Realtor and managing broker, Mark Keene, said the damage and prolonged outages have delayed showings and disrupted property management work, including instances where clients were displaced due to tree-related impacts and flooding that is expected to improve once electricity is restored.

The storms began Aug. 11 and brought record rainfall, flooding, and widespread destruction, with Keene describing debris such as downed trees that continued to block access and delay recovery efforts.

HousingWire also notes the disaster has prompted scrutiny of NIPSCO, including a class-action lawsuit alleging poor vegetation management near power lines contributed to outages, and that potential losses may exceed $5 billion, which the utility disputes.
