Canada funds 64 scholars with C$504 million to boost research capacity
The program is part of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s plan to spend C$1.7 billion over 12 years to recruit more than 1,000 researchers.
Canada has awarded funding to 64 global scholars worth C$504 million (US$362 million) so they can relocate to Canadian universities and expand research in areas including health and artificial intelligence, according to SCMP Economy.
Of the funded researchers, 48 are described as having been recruited from the United States, including scholars from Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, while the remaining 16 are coming from countries including the UK, Germany, China, and Japan.
The announcement, made by Industry Minister Melanie Joly in Vancouver, framed Canada’s effort as a bid to double down on science and research as other countries cut funding and adjust immigration policies.
SCMP Economy said the initiative contrasts with recent US federal research funding cuts, along with tighter immigration rules and reported tensions between the Trump administration and top-tier universities, and it is tied to a broader Carney government initiative to allocate C$1.7 billion over 12 years to hire more than 1,000 researchers.
