South Korea backs US bid to restart North Korea dialogue, warns on security

South Korea’s national security adviser said the talks should deliver substantive nuclear progress while preserving Seoul’s security readiness and avoiding being sidelined in Washington.

South Korea supports US President Donald Trump’s effort to resume dialogue with North Korea, but wants to ensure the initiative does not weaken Seoul’s security posture or leave it out of coordination, according to comments from South Korea’s national security adviser reported by Reuters.

Wi Sung-lac said the renewed US North Korea discussions should focus on progress toward North Korea’s nuclear weapons issue while not undermining the country’s security readiness, including efforts to establish a peace regime on the Korean peninsula.

He also said policy coordination and communication between South Korea and the United States were more important than ever to ensure the dialogue leads to substantive nuclear progress and properly aligns with broader peace efforts.
