UK NEET rate stays near one million for ages 16 to 24

ONS data puts the number of young people not in education, employment, or training at 981,000 in the April to June period, about one in eight.

BBC Business reports that just under one million young people in the UK are not in education, employment, or training, with 981,000 aged 16 to 24 classified as NEET between April and June.

The outlet says the NEET count is down from the first quarter of the year, when it was over one million, but it is up from the same period last year, when 951,000 young people were NEET. The estimates are based on a household sample, and the Office for National Statistics cautioned that smaller breakdowns can show more quarter to quarter variability.

BBC Business adds that the Labour and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden said ministers would take forward recommendations from a final report due in the coming weeks by former minister Alan Milburn. McFadden also told the BBC that while the UK labour market is in a robust position, there is a long term challenge for young people.

The piece includes an example from London resident Asia Mason, who said she applied for more than 30 jobs before securing her first role in the NHS after completing a social care programme run by The King’s Trust charity. McFadden spoke to the BBC during a visit to Boots in Nottingham, where young people began jobs in a pilot of the government’s Jobs Guarantee scheme.
