US jobless claims decline to 203K in week ending Aug. 22

The report showed continuing claims falling to 1.778M, while the four-week average of initial claims edged up to 205.5K.

US initial jobless claims fell from a revised 207K to 203K for the week ending Aug. 22, according to figures cited by Action Forex, beating expectations for 209K.

The latest reading keeps claims near historically low levels and suggests employers are not shedding workers as aggressively as broader labor-demand cooling signals might otherwise imply.

Continuing claims improved as well, dropping from a revised 1.796M to 1.778M for the week ending Aug. 15.

Action Forex also pointed out that the four-week average of initial claims rose from a revised 204.25K to 205.5K, indicating the underlying trend is firmer even though the most recent weekly drop could partly reflect week to week volatility.
