Polygon Labs tells node operators to upgrade after Austin and Kyoto
Polygon said stale Polygon PoS nodes that do not move past the post-hardfork binary cutoffs have already fallen out of canonical consensus, requiring an upgrade and catch up to rejoin accepted history.
Polygon Labs said any Polygon Proof-of-Stake node that stayed on pre-hardfork Bor or Heimdall binaries past specific August activation heights has already fallen out of canonical consensus, meaning the operator must upgrade and catch up before following the network’s accepted history again, according to CryptoSlate.
In its Aug. 27 security review, Polygon linked the Austin and Kyoto upgrades to client-compatibility consequences and framed them as proactive fixes, saying it had not observed mainnet disruption from the changes.
Polygon described two Austin-related weaknesses affecting Bor’s execution client. One issue could lead to delayed block processing if enough state-sync events from L1-to-L2 bridge deposits triggered gas use that was not previously counted against a fixed block-level ceiling. The second could crash peers if a block producer included an oversized blob via Bor’s TxDependency extra-data field, which Austin removed from the wire format.
For Kyoto, Polygon said the highest-severity fix targeted deeply nested google.protobuf.Any messages, adding byte-level nesting checks at both mempool admission and block-proposal processing to prevent validators from being forced into expensive decoding. Polygon also noted additional limits around fee-coin lists and said Heimdall’s integration permits one fee coin, with Austin compatibility tied to Bor versions v2.10.0 and later and Heimdall validators and full nodes needing v0.11.0 after the Kyoto activation.
