S&P 500 rises even when stocks broadly struggle as AI draws bids
MarketWatch notes investors are leaning on a small group of mega-cap Big Tech stocks that can swing the index on a single trading session.
Investors have kept the S&P 500 climbing on days when many stocks are struggling more broadly, with attention concentrated on a narrow group of large, highly valued Big Tech names tied to artificial intelligence, according to MarketWatch.
The outlet said this AI focus can at times strengthen the influence of those mega-cap stocks, making them capable of driving the index’s direction and potentially determining how the S&P 500 trades within a single session.
In effect, when breadth is weak, the index can still rise if those AI-linked leaders attract enough buying to offset broader market pressure, MarketWatch added.
