HMRC publishes UK crypto capital gains data, showing £1.38B in gains
For the 2024 to 2025 tax year, 17,600 individuals reported £13.8B of disposal proceeds, while 240 investors with more than £1M each accounted for £717M of the gains.
UK tax authorities have begun releasing crypto-specific capital gains data, with HM Revenue and Customs reporting £1.38 billion in declared cryptoasset gains for the 2024 to 2025 tax year, according to CryptoSlate.
The initial HMRC figures cover 17,600 individuals who reported £13.8 billion of cryptoasset disposal proceeds, with just 240 investors accounting for more than half of the gains at £717 million.
HMRC said the publication reflects the first crypto-specific section added to Self Assessment returns, meaning the dataset captures declared Capital Gains Tax-liable disposals rather than every crypto transaction in the UK.
The outlet also notes HMRC expects reporting to improve as the OECD’s Cryptoasset Reporting Framework rolls out, with crypto businesses collecting data from January 2026 and HMRC starting to receive provider reports in 2027, alongside no delay to existing filing deadlines, including payment due by Jan. 31, 2027.
