AMD tops 30% of x86 client CPU market share in Q2
AMD’s x86 client share rose to 30.3% in Q2, helped by steadier shipments as Intel’s share declined, even as the desktop market shrank more than 20% last year.
AMD has taken a bigger share of the x86 client CPU market, reaching 30.3% in the second quarter, according to Mercury Research, versus 21.1% two years earlier. Intel still held the remaining 69.7%, but its share has been slipping.
The gain came as AMD expanded across desktops, laptops, and servers at the same time. AMD’s desktop share climbed to 34.9%, but the desktop market itself shrank more than 20% last year, with the decline attributed largely to soaring memory prices that made new PCs more expensive.
Yahoo Finance notes that the share increase is best viewed as AMD holding up better than Intel in a contracting market rather than a broad demand surge. It also highlights that client CPUs are described as the least profitable part of the competition, while the data center segment is where AMD is gaining more momentum.
In the data center business, AMD’s revenue more than doubled in Q2 to $6.7 billion, and its server share rose to 34.5%. The article says AMD CEO Lisa Su expects data center sales to double again in 2027, as hyperscalers including Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet expand their use of AMD chips.
