IEF dips below its 10-month moving average in Ivy Portfolio update
ETF Trends said the Ivy Portfolio signaled a cash shift in August after iShares 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF (IEF) finished just below its 10-month SMA, while the S&P 500 gained 2.6% for the month.
ETF Trends updated its monthly moving-average signals for the Ivy Portfolio, an equally weighted, five-ETF strategy based on endowment-style asset allocation from Harvard and Yale. The method computes a 10-month simple moving average for each ETF and, if a fund closes a month below its average, the strategy sells it and holds cash until it closes back above the moving average.
In the August month-end snapshot, the signal showed a single cash position because IEF closed just below its 10-month SMA. The article also uses a second, 12-month simple moving average view, with four of the five Ivy Portfolio ETFs finishing above their averages, while IEF was again flagged within 2% of its signal and closed below this benchmark.
ETF Trends also noted that the S&P 500 closed August with a 2.6% monthly gain, reversing a two-month losing streak, as it analyzed the index through moving averages as well. The update was based on prices after the close of the last business day of August.
