MapQuest tops US iPhone downloads after refusing to rename Lake Ontario
The app was No. 1 on Apple’s US App Store as of Tuesday morning, and its usage was running about 50 times its usual rate, the company said.
MapQuest has become the most downloaded navigation app in the US after it refused to rename Lake Ontario, a move tied to a wider Trump administration effort that also draws on a trade spat with Canada, the Guardian reports. The app leapfrogged Google Maps and Apple Maps on the top-downloaded US chart, according to the outlet.
MapQuest held the No. 1 spot on Apple’s App Store as of Tuesday morning, while Google has shown “Lake America” to US customers after changing course and Apple is reportedly considering whether to make the same update under pressure from the White House.
The report says the app’s downloads have “soared” in recent days, lifting it to the fourth most popular non-game app in the US, with Google at No. 2 on the navigation chart, citing TechCrunch. In Canada, MapQuest was also reported as the second-most downloaded app overall by Sunday night.
The Guardian adds that polls cited in the piece showed only 14% of Americans favor renaming the lake, while 20% approved of higher tariffs on Canadian goods, and 57% opposed. MapQuest general manager Doug Berger said usage was running about 50 times its usual rate and that subscribers can generate their own name for the lake via a feature the company introduced after the “Gulf of America” rebranding effort.
