NY Democratic Socialists win Albany seats after socialist slate gains

The DSA-backed election results could bolster efforts to expand tenant protections, including tougher eviction rules, and advance state climate and housing affordability priorities.

Albany may see a more left-leaning legislative bloc after a wave of Democratic Socialists of America endorsed candidates won seats in the New York State Legislature, positioning them to pursue a budget and policy agenda tied to campaigns run this spring, according to Commercial Observer.

The outlet reports that, following congressional primary wins by Mayor Zohran Mamdani-backed candidates in recent weeks, a dozen lesser-known DSA-endorsed contenders secured a clear path to state seats by defeating moderate primary opponents in reliably left-leaning districts.

Commercial Observer says the candidates campaigned on raising taxes on wealthy individuals, restricting aid to Israel, making housing more affordable, and building more public renewable energy.

In its reporting, Commercial Observer also links the new slate to prior legislative wins by socialist state lawmakers, including expanded rental protections for tenants such as tougher eviction rules and policy efforts on a climate law requiring New York to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
