Ontology halts mainnet block production for emergency security review

Ontology said no confirmed incident or asset compromise has been found, and it warned users not to attempt time-sensitive transfers while validators assess the network.

Ontology halted block production on its mainnet on Aug. 31 after developers flagged a potential security concern during a routine daily check, freezing onchain transaction processing while the network undergoes an emergency review.

According to The Defiant, the chain’s explorer listed block 20,770,893 as the latest, created at 4:24:26 a.m. ET, and Ontology said it has not identified a specific suspected vulnerability or affected component. Ontology characterized the suspension as a preventive security measure rather than a response to confirmed asset loss, adding that its current assessment found no indication of asset loss or compromise.

The project said no onchain transactions will be processed while block production is paused, and it warned users not to attempt time-sensitive transfers. Its bridge interface remained accessible, but any bridge transfer that depends on an Ontology-side transaction cannot complete until block production resumes.

Separately, Upbit suspended deposits and withdrawals for ONT, ONG and MBL on the Ontology network, while trading continued. Ontology said the pause’s duration is undetermined, block production will resume only after the network is deemed safe, and it advised users they do not need to move their ONT, ONG or other onchain assets because of the halt.
