PERILS estimates EUR 2.186 billion in July Europe storm losses
PERILS said the convective storm wave lasted from 13 to 19 July 2026 and involved countries including Germany, France, Switzerland, and Italy.
PERILS, a Zurich-based catastrophe insurance data provider, has issued an initial industry loss estimate of EUR 2.186 billion for severe convective storms across Europe, covering events that affected Germany, France, Switzerland, and Italy between 13 and 19 July 2026.
The estimate is based on loss data collected from insurers and follows PERILS coverage definitions for Europe, which include property and motor lines. PERILS described the storm setup as high-level cool air sweeping in from the northeast, triggering multiple scattered storm cells.
PERILS said the damage patterns included property damage from high winds and wind-borne debris, vehicle and building damage from very large hail, and flash flooding in basements and cellars. It noted that while multi-billion-euro SCS losses are not unheard of, the magnitude of this tally stands out, and such events can be undercounted because they are often localized rather than headline-grabbing.
PERILS added that an updated market-loss estimate will be published on 19 October 2026, about three months after the event ended. It also argued that the storm cells were notable for both their lengthy duration and geographical reach, which it linked to a steadily warming atmosphere.
