BP names Ian Tyler as permanent chair after Albert Manifold ousting

The board says the leadership change follows governance oversight and conduct concerns, and Tyler will oversee a strategic pivot away from renewable investments.

BP has appointed Ian Tyler as its permanent chair immediately, after a months-long search following the late May ousting of Albert Manifold, the Guardian Business reports.

Tyler had been serving as interim chair and as a non-executive director since April 2025. BP said the removal of Manifold followed concerns over governance oversight and conduct.

The senior independent director Amanda Blanc, who led the search, will step down at next year’s annual meeting. Manifold had been appointed only eight months earlier.

Tyler, a former chief executive of Balfour Beatty and chair of Grafton Group, is tasked with overseeing a strategy shift that refocuses BP on fossil fuel extraction and drops renewable investments, according to the report.
