Cronos halted and restarted after exploit, differing from Ontology and ICON
Cronos said it restarted production from block 90,896,189 with state rolled back, while Ontology paused before confirming malicious activity and ICON halted after assets were already in exchange custody.
Three blockchain networks stopped producing blocks within four days, and their emergency actions used different powers, creating different outcomes for any potentially affected funds, according to CryptoSlate. Cronos said validators halted the network through a validator-consensus emergency action after an exploit affected Tectonic. The chain was restored to state from before the incident, with production resuming from block 90,896,189, meaning the intervention replaced both state and block production, so transactions and state changes that existed only after the chosen restore point no longer belonged to the restarted canonical chain.
Ontology and ICON used different levers. Ontology suspended block production before confirming malicious attack activity, and a Sept. 1 update said the activity did not compromise user assets, while ICON first paused an affected contract and then halted a network it said it controlled during a migration period, after most of the affected ICX had already entered exchange custody.
CryptoSlate noted that a blockchain halt shows only the first layer of control, raising questions about who can order a stop, whether canonical state can be replaced, and what losses remain once funds move to another chain or a centralized custodian. The outlet also highlighted that recovery scope remains unsettled, with TRM Labs estimating about $75 million borrowed after TONIC price manipulation, including about $6 million reaching Ethereum and about $68.7 million reversed on Cronos, while Bitquery reported larger gross outflows of about $8.3 million on Ethereum and 10,961 discarded blocks, and Tectonic's final official loss remains pending.
