Optimism aims for 200 ms subblocks, zeroing key fields in streams
Optimism plans to cut preconfirmation intervals to 200 ms by Aug. 31, but it will stop providing usable values for four streamed fields, including state_root and block_hash.
Optimism is targeting 200 millisecond subblocks on OP Mainnet, a change meant to reduce the preconfirmation interval from 250 milliseconds in a rolling update targeted for Aug. 31. Subblocks, formerly called Flashblocks, are incremental sequencer updates that give apps earlier feedback before a normal block is sealed.
The migration keeps streamed payloads parseable by leaving the payload type the same, ExecutionPayloadFlashblockDeltaV1, so software can decode without errors. However, Optimism says four fields will remain present but will carry placeholder values that are no longer usable: state_root and block_hash will be all-zero, and withdrawals_root will be all-zero with withdrawals represented as an empty list.
Optimism says receipts_root and logs_bloom will still contain real values, and it cautions that the zeroed roots and block hash should be treated as absent. In its guidance, it says direct stream consumers should derive preconfirmed state by executing the transactions in the stream rather than relying on those raw payload fields.
HousingWire reports? No, according to the Optimism integration approach described by CryptoSlate, most applications rely on safer connections such as subblocks-aware RPC providers and use Ethereum methods like the pending tag to get derived preconfirmed data from their own maintained state view. The audit impact falls on systems that ingest the WebSocket stream directly and on RPC providers that forward raw fields to customers, including a need to prevent the placeholder values from entering balances or proof inputs.
