Sadiq Khan faces fine after conviction tied to an untaxed vehicle
City Hall says the car involved a Nissan Micra that did not belong to Khan or Transport for London, with officials reviewing the prosecution after a report to the DVLA.
London mayor Sadiq Khan has been fined after a conviction over an untaxed vehicle that City Hall says was registered to him despite not belonging to him or Transport for London, according to the Guardian Business.
Khan was found guilty last month under the single justice procedure, a fast track system where magistrates can decide hundreds of cases a day, sometimes in under a minute per case. Court documents cited by the outlet say the Nissan Micra, a 24-year-old vehicle, was flagged as untaxed on 24 January, with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency alleging Khan was the keeper of the car.
The conviction carried a £220 fine, £85 in costs, and a £35.84 payment for unpaid tax tied to the Micra. Khan’s office said he is the victim of a scam and that the DVLA has applied to reopen the case and withdraw the prosecution.
The Guardian Business reported that PA Media alerted the DVLA on Tuesday, prompting a review and investigation. It also said DVLA letters addressed to Khan about the unpaid tax bill were sent to a Gordon Ramsay restaurant in east London instead of nearby TfL offices, and Khan could be required to appear in court to try to overturn the conviction.
