U.K. NCA freezes Premier League bank funds tied to Sorare
The National Crime Agency froze more than 10 million pounds, obtained in January 2025 under the Proceeds of Crime Act, while it investigates possible links to alleged third-party criminality.
CoinDesk reports that the U.K.'s National Crime Agency has frozen more than 10 million pounds, about $13.5 million, in a Premier League bank account as part of a crypto-related investigation.
The agency said the order is intended to prevent dissipation of the funds while it examines potential links between the money and alleged third-party criminality, while also noting there is no suspicion of wrongdoing by the Premier League.
Authorities say the cash is linked to the Premier League's first payment under a terminated $140 million, four-year partnership with Sorare that was signed in 2023 and ended at the conclusion of last season.
CoinDesk adds that the freeze is separate from a Gambling Commission matter in which Sorare was charged in September 2024 over alleged unlicensed gambling facilities, an accusation Sorare denies, and the outlet notes regulators have been tightening scrutiny of crypto sponsorship deals in football.
