US universities restrict CPT for international student internships
The changes follow SEVP directives that take a stricter view of when Curricular Practical Training can be authorized, and include pauses or limits at multiple universities.
International students in the United States are facing new hurdles for internships and certain off-campus work as several major universities paused or restricted Curricular Practical Training, a work authorization tied to study.
According to SCMP Economy, universities including the University of Pennsylvania, New York University, the University of Southern California, the University of Washington, the University of Rochester, and the University of California, Berkeley have either paused pending applications or limited CPT to internships that are mandatory components of degree programs.
The university adjustments follow August guidance from the Student and Exchange Visitor Programme, a division of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. SCMP Economy reports that on August 12, SEVP issued a message reminding school officials of their responsibilities when approving CPT.
