BP appoints Ian Tyler as permanent chair to reset governance
Tyler takes over immediately after the board removed Albert Manifold in late May, and BP said it had serious concerns about his tenure.
BP has appointed Ian Tyler as its permanent chair, ending a prolonged leadership shake-up at the UK oil and gas company. Tyler has served as interim chair and a non-executive director since April 2025, and will assume the role immediately, according to the Guardian Business.
The new appointment follows the controversial ousting of Albert Manifold, who was removed in late May after only eight months in the role. BP said it had “serious concerns” about Manifold’s tenure, as the board sought to draw a line under years of boardroom turmoil, the Guardian Business reported.
Tyler is now tasked with overseeing a strategy shift to refocus BP on fossil fuel extraction. The change comes as Amanda Blanc, BP’s senior independent director who led the search for a new chair, announced she will stand down at next year’s annual meeting, according to the outlet.
Manifold’s removal reignited earlier disputes around governance and conduct, including accusations that he acted aggressively and behaved as if he were an executive rather than a chair. The Guardian Business also noted that Manifold disputed BP’s account, saying the company fired him without warning, while Blanc faced criticism tied to her role in the process that led to his appointment.
