Young millionaires shift portfolios from stocks toward alternatives
A Bank of America survey cited by Yahoo Finance found 21- to 43-year-olds with at least $3 million in assets hold 28% in stocks versus 55% for older wealthy investors.
Young Americans with at least $3 million in assets are allocating less to stocks than older wealthy investors, with Bank of America survey results cited by Yahoo Finance showing a growing preference for alternatives amid recent market volatility.
According to the survey, individuals aged 21 to 43 hold 28% of their portfolios in stocks, compared with 55% for wealthy investors aged above 43. Yahoo Finance also reports that 93% of wealthy young Americans plan to increase their exposure to alternative investments over the next few years.
The survey results also point to gold as a key alternative, with 45% of wealthy young investors owning gold as a physical asset and another 45% interested in holding it. Yahoo Finance frames gold as a potential hedge against inflation and market volatility.
Yahoo Finance links the renewed interest in gold to current concerns including recession fears tied to the war in Iran, trade-policy uncertainty from tariffs, and worries about an AI-driven tech bubble, saying enthusiasm has pushed gold to record levels over the past year and that the metal has reached historic highs near $5,000 per ounce.
