Ethereum commits to Frame Transactions that shift gas-fee payment to others
The upgrade is planned for the Hegotá release in 2027, after the earlier Glamsterdam update later this year.
Ethereum core developers have committed to a feature called Frame Transactions, designed to let apps or other users pay an Ethereum gas fee in ether on someone’s behalf, reducing the need for the account to hold ETH.
The change, tied to EIP-8141, was moved to “Scheduled for Inclusion” during an Aug. 27 core developer call, positioning it as part of the network update rather than just a candidate feature. Under the approach, Ethereum frames split a transaction into separate steps, including authorization checks and the setup of who pays the fee.
According to CoinDesk, Frame Transactions would bundle related actions and support account authorization methods that can be adopted without moving funds to a new address. The system is intended to address situations where wallets with assets such as stablecoins cannot move them because they do not have ether to cover the network fee.
CoinDesk also notes that Ethereum updates are typically bundled into upgrades every year or so with different codenames, with Glamsterdam due later this year and Hegotá planned for 2027 to include Frame Transactions. Vitalik Buterin, an author of the proposal, said progress on Frames has been continuing over recent months.
