Arm CEO says AI could help cure cancer within his lifetime
Rene Haas told the BBC that computer models of DNA changes linked to cancer are currently too complex, but said future AI systems will solve the problem, and he also pointed to AI-enabled lung diagnosis in the UK via NHS funding.
Arm Holdings CEO Rene Haas said AI could help find a cure for cancer within his lifetime, arguing that as AI-enabled computers become more sophisticated, they will eventually crack complex scientific problems that are too hard to model today. Haas said scientists are already using AI-driven tools in cancer research and testing, and he cited the NHS view that more than 4 million patients received faster lung diagnoses thanks to AI-powered X-ray tools.
Haas added that he expects AI to support broader adoption of humanoid robots within the next five years, describing how such robots could see, learn, and be reprogrammed for new tasks. He linked that timeline to existing constraints, saying chip shortages are stunting growth for the technology.
Arm, which is listed in New York and keeps its global headquarters in Cambridge, employs more than 7,000 staff including about 3,000 in the UK, and its chip designs are used by roughly 500 customers worldwide, including Apple, Samsung, Qualcomm and Nvidia.
Haas, who joined Arm in 2013 and became CEO in 2022, was also recently named chief executive of SoftBank’s international business, with SoftBank holding a stake in ChatGPT maker OpenAI, according to the article.
