Construction firms expand nuclear work across the value chain

Fluor is the lead contractor for Centrus Energy’s Ohio enrichment facility expansion, a project supported by a prior $900 million Department of Energy award.

Investors targeting the nuclear renaissance are increasingly looking beyond reactor developers and uranium miners, with construction and supply chain firms now earning income across the nuclear value chain, ETF Trends reports. Companies cited include Fluor and AtkinsRéalis, both tied to multiple active projects rather than longer-dated reactor timelines.

Fluor is working with nuclear industry partners on expanding uranium enrichment capacity and building advanced reactors, including a selection by Centrus Energy as lead contractor for expansion of an enrichment facility in Ohio. The contract is part of a multi-billion dollar plan to increase domestic uranium enrichment capacity, and Centrus previously received a $900 million award from the Department of Energy for the Ohio facility.

Fluor is also involved in a proposed reactor effort in Texas with X-energy and Dow. X-energy is working with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to receive approval to build four Xe-100 small modular reactors, which are designed to power a Dow-owned plant rather than the national electric grid, and the VettaFi Nuclear Renaissance Index includes companies such as Fluor and Centrus Energy to provide exposure across the sector.

AtkinsRéalis, meanwhile, has projects spanning reactor lifecycle stages in Canada, including Candu Energy’s $450 million contract for constructing four SMRs at the Darlington New Nuclear Project. The BWRX-300 reactor is designed by a joint venture between GE Vernova and Hitachi, and the project reached a milestone with the installation of a 2.1-million-pound basemat module, the concrete foundation supporting the reactor structure, according to ETF Trends.
