Cronos says $9.2 million remains unrecovered after Tectonic exploit
Cronos said the Aug. 30 exploit involved a $120.4 million borrowing, and a rollback reversed about $111.2 million, but roughly $9.19 million, or 7.6% of affected funds, had already left the chain.
Cronos said about $9.19 million remains unrecovered following an Aug. 30 exploit tied to its Tectonic lending protocol, even after validators halted the network and a rollback restored balances to their pre attack state, according to The Block.
Cronos said the attacker used manipulated collateral to borrow $120.4 million across nine markets before validators stopped the chain. After validator consensus, the network was rolled back from block 90,907,150 to block 90,896,188, reversing roughly $111.2 million in impacted value.
The blockchain team said the remaining amount could not be restored because it had already been transferred off the network during the attack. Cronos said about 1 hour and 54 minutes of chain history, or 10,961 blocks, was discarded, so transactions in that window were reversed regardless of whether they were related to the exploit.
Cronos said it identified the malicious activity about 36 minutes after the attack began, then suspended activity and proceeded with the rollback. The team said the decision balanced user expectations of finality against the funds at risk, and noted that restarting without restoring state would have left borrowed assets in the attacker’s control.
