EU antitrust regulators examine Oracle cloud licensing before earnings
The European Commission is gathering input from Oracle customers and rivals as the stock trades near $158.78 and faces its first-quarter fiscal 2027 report due Sept. 10.
European antitrust regulators in Brussels are conducting an early review of how Oracle licenses its software ahead of the company’s earnings week, a process that could add another layer of uncertainty for shareholders already focused on Oracle’s debt-heavy AI and cloud buildout, according to Yahoo Finance.
The European Commission is collecting information from Oracle customers and rivals to assess whether Oracle’s cloud software terms unfairly lock clients in, regulators can either escalate to a full investigation or drop the case depending on whether they find evidence of wrongdoing.
The potential core issue is vendor lock-in, where contract structure makes it costly or complicated for customers to leave, keeping them on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure rather than alternatives such as Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud.
The timing comes as Oracle reports stretched balance sheet metrics, with total liabilities rising from $147.4 billion to $218.7 billion over one year, and it points to an earnings catalyst with Oracle’s first-quarter fiscal 2027 results due Sept. 10, 2026.
