Collateralized reinsurance sidecar market grows as capital sophistication varies

Northern Re says the casualty sidecar market added more than $5 billion in capacity during 2025, but vehicles differ widely in underwriting margin, asset strategies, and how much carriers can see behind the collateral.

The collateralized reinsurance sidecar market has accelerated in recent years, with casualty and non-catastrophe vehicles cited as key contributors to the expansion, according to Artemis. Northern Re Managing Partner Anthony McKelvy told Artemis that the outstanding market for collateralized reinsurance sidecar structures grew by more than $5 billion in capacity terms over full-year 2025. He linked that momentum to investor demand for insurance-linked returns, calling the appetite “healthy” for the market.

McKelvy said, however, that the boom is not uniform, with “meaningful dispersion” in how sidecars are structured. He pointed to variation across transactions in underwriting margin, the asset strategies used to generate yield, and the level of visibility carriers have into the underlying assets.

He also emphasized that some current vehicles can function more like financial products behind insurance balance sheets than standalone reinsurance businesses, and said investors and cedents should examine what they are actually transacting. McKelvy further argued that while underwriting diligence matters, capital-side mechanics and structural asymmetry, including how capital is posted and released and how buffers and credits are sized, can significantly affect investor economics.
