Companies increasingly tie promotions to AI proficiency at work

The shift is being driven by pressure to realize returns from AI spending, even as many firms have yet to see significant value.

More employers are linking career progression to how effectively staff use AI tools, with workers being evaluated on AI use for bonuses, promotions, or even potential job risk, according to BBC Business.

A marketing employee at an AI training data company, Duncan Trevithick, questions whether the incentive truly pays off, saying that boosting output becomes a new baseline rather than translating into extra time off or large wage gains, even if it may support near-term promotion.

BBC Business also notes that high-profile companies including Accenture, Disney, Meta, JP Morgan, and KPMG have introduced systems to track and rank employee AI usage, and that Coinbase has fired engineers who did not complete AI training requested by CEO Brian Armstrong.

The report cites consultant McKinsey saying 94% of companies have not yet seen significant value from AI, while it also points to a UK labor-market backdrop where vacancies have hit a five-year low and recruiter Gi Group found most jobseekers say they would still apply to organizations that include AI proficiency in performance reviews.
