NY to release 170,000 pages on toxic air response after 9/11
The release follows an agreement tied to a lawsuit by 9/11 Health Watch and covers the citys health and air quality actions after the World Trade Centre collapse.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the release of tens of thousands of documents on what the city knew about toxic air after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, with the online posting comprising 170,000 pages focused on health concerns, air quality, and the city response.
The announcement comes ahead of the 25th anniversary of the attacks, which killed 2,977 people, mostly in the collapse of the Twin Towers, and a federal medical monitoring programme cited by the mayor says more than 9,400 people have died from illnesses linked to exposure in the years since.
Mamdani said the documents show what the city knew about toxic air around Ground Zero, when it knew it, and how it acted to limit liability. He also said multiple prior administrations withheld information from the public, the US Congress, and the City Council.
The release is part of an agreement with 9/11 Health Watch, a victims advocacy group that had taken legal action to compel the city to make the records public, and the group argued that officials had continued messaging that the air was safe and acceptable.
