OpenAI says 10,000 AI agents proposed a solution to Navier-Stokes
The proposed proof targets the $1 million Millennium Prize Problem and was produced in 88 hours, according to OpenAI.
OpenAI said an experimental system involving roughly 10,000 AI agents produced a proposed solution to the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems carrying a $1 million prize.
CoinDesk reports the company’s proof argues that a fluid vortex could reach infinite speed in finite time while still retaining finite total energy, a scenario that, in turn, would imply where the usual Navier-Stokes assumptions can fail.
OpenAI said the internal system was significantly more capable than GPT-6 Astra and that the agents exchanged 2.7 million messages and generated about 130 billion tokens over the 88-hour run, before Astra spent an additional 17 hours formalizing and checking the proof, the outlet said.
The claim has also sparked debate among mathematicians over whether de-identified data tied to two mathematicians’ related work may have influenced the model, while OpenAI said it did not access their specific work before publication, CoinDesk reported.
