Premier League clubs could lose gambling sponsors in UK crackdown

An eight week UK consultation on banning sponsorship from unlicensed gambling firms runs through Wednesday, while analysis found top-flight clubs’ unlicensed ties rose over the summer.

Premier League clubs face the risk of losing lucrative sponsorships tied to unlicensed gambling firms if UK rules under development bar those companies from sponsoring teams and advertising in the league, according to the Guardian Business.

The outlet reports that the eight week consultation on proposals to ban sponsorship from gambling companies not licensed in the UK closes on Wednesday, with licensed operators such as Ladbrokes and William Hill positioned against the Premier League in a dispute that could cost clubs tens of millions of pounds.

Analysis by the Guardian found the number of top flight clubs with commercial relationships involving unlicensed operators rose from six to 10 over the summer, after the league imposed a voluntary ban this season on front of shirt gambling sponsorships.

The story also notes that Everton has a three year sleeve sponsorship deal with online crypto casino Stake.com, based in Australia and Curaçao, and that unlicensed operators earned £379 million from UK users in the first half of 2025, about 9% of Britain’s £8.2 billion online gaming marketplace, up from 2% in 2022.
