Walt Disney financed Snow White through loans, borrowing, and car sale
The film’s production costs ran up to $250,000 in 1934, and Snow White went on to gross $8 million in its first year.
Walt Disney financed the 1934 production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs by taking on personal debt and liquidating assets, according to a Yahoo Finance account that cites comments from his wife, Lillian.
The story says costs rose to $250,000, and despite outside investors, the company still struggled to raise enough to complete the film. Disney sold his car, mortgaged his house, and borrowed against his life insurance to fund the movie after investors and payments fell short.
It also notes that before release, Hollywood outlets were calling the project “Disney’s folly.” Afterward, Snow White went on to gross $8 million in its first year, which the article describes as equivalent to about $188 million in today’s dollars.
The piece adds that in later years Disney pursued another major bet, the creation of Disneyland, while Lillian remained concerned, saying she “never felt secure” as Disney emphasized their wealth while they believed they lacked financial safety.
