Apple unveils first major iPhone redesign in nearly 20 years
The first foldable iPhone, called the Duo, will start at $1,999 and rise to $3,200, making it Apple’s priciest iPhone lineup to date.
Apple has started its next iPhone era by revealing the first major design change to the device in nearly 20 years, introducing a new foldable model at its annual product release event. John Ternus, who began his second week as chief executive after Tim Cook stepped down, was onstage to present the new “Duo,” the company’s first book-style foldable iPhone.
The foldable iPhone is set up to operate in two forms, when unfolded it resembles a small iPad, and when folded it looks like a wider iPhone. Apple positioned the design as an attempt to avoid the feel of competing foldables, which it said can make a larger screen seem much smaller.
Pricing underscores the gamble, with a US starting price of $1,999 that can rise to $3,200. In the UK, prices begin at £1,999, and the report notes that the prior highest starting price of a new iPhone had been $900.
Analysts cited by the BBC Business expressed uncertainty about whether the foldable could deliver meaningful growth, warning it may become a premium-priced “ornament” rather than a major hit. The outlet also points to comparable Apple products, suggesting the Duo could face the same kind of adoption challenge seen with the Vision Pro, which is priced at $3,699 and has not been a buyer success.
