Leveraged single-stock ETFs spread from megacaps to niche themes

Since U.S. single-stock leveraged and inverse ETFs began in July 2022, issuers have expanded beyond daily 2x bets on megacaps into niche names, including drone, photonics, and crypto miner exposure.

Single-stock leveraged ETFs have moved far beyond their early focus on megacap technology. ETF Trends reports that, while leveraged and inverse ETFs existed for years, U.S.-listed leveraged and inverse ETFs tied to individual stocks did not launch until July 2022.

According to ETF Trends, AXS Investments started the first U.S. suite in July 2022 with eight funds offering leveraged or inverse daily exposure to actively traded stocks like Tesla and Nvidia. Direxion followed with 2x Tesla products, including the Direxion Daily TSLA Bull 2X ETF, which is still among the most liquid leveraged ETFs in the U.S. ETF universe by 30-day average volume, where it ranks second.

Regulators have warned about concentration and compounding risk in these products. The SEC highlighted that daily compounding can cause results to diverge materially if an ETF is held beyond the time horizon it is designed for, because a 2x daily fund targets twice a single trading day's performance rather than an extended period.

ETF Trends says competition among issuers has also broadened the underlying assets into less familiar areas. Recent regulatory filings cited by the outlet show leveraged products reaching into drones, photonics, and crypto miners, including funds designed around Red Cat, POET Technologies, and Bitdeer Technologies, alongside other niche thematic exposures.
