London Stock Exchange explores blockchain share listing with Payward
The LSE said it is also planning to list xStocks on its LSE 24 venue in 2027, both projects subject to regulatory approval.
Tokenized stocks market themselves as stocklike products, but their underlying contracts can differ from true share ownership, meaning investors may not have the same rights or control as shareholders, according to CryptoSlate.
The outlet describes how two users can see the same company name and similar price action in investment apps while holding different instruments, one as actual shares in the company and the other as a token designed to track those shares.
CryptoSlate notes that actual share rights can include participation in business financial fortunes, potential voting rights, dividend eligibility, and a residual claim if the company fails, with brokers commonly holding shares through nominees that track beneficial owners rather than direct registration.
CryptoSlate adds that the London Stock Exchange is exploring ways to bring shares onto blockchain networks while preserving shareholder rights, citing its Sep. 1 announcement with Payward, and that it separately plans to list xStocks on its LSE 24 venue in 2027, subject to approval.
