OpenAI coordinated 10,000 AI agents to resolve a Millennium Prize problem

The effort used about 130 billion output tokens and produced a proof that smooth fluid motion can develop a singularity in finite time.

OpenAI said its latest AI system solved a long-standing mathematics challenge, the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, a Millennium Prize Problem with a $1 million award from the Clay Mathematics Institute. The company said it coordinated roughly 10,000 AI agents to complete the work in 88 hours, then used an additional 17 hours to formalize and verify the result in Lean. Before formal verification, the agents exchanged about 2.7 million messages and generated around 130 billion output tokens, according to CryptoSlate.

OpenAI said the proof shows that initially smooth fluid motion can develop a singularity in finite time, resolving a question that has been open since the 1930s. The company added that it does not intend to claim the prize, and that the proof still needs to withstand broader scrutiny before it is universally accepted.

The American Mathematical Society characterized the development as a milestone advance in human knowledge, crediting decades of prior work by mathematicians before the final steps taken with OpenAI’s system. CryptoSlate also noted early concern among observers about the competitive implications of frontier labs building systems far more capable than what customers have access to.

OpenAI said its Navier-Stokes effort used an internal model substantially more capable than its recently released GPT-6 Astra, and that the system remains in training. The outlet also reported that OpenAI began the Millennium Prize effort after hearing rumors two problems had been solved, and it denied seeing researchers’ earlier unpublish work before deploying thousands of agents for the final effort.
