Former police officer charged in Poland over Zondacrypto probe
Polish prosecutors said the defendant faces two counts, including participation in an organized criminal group and aiding misappropriation of crypto users funds tied to the collapsed exchange.
Polish prosecutors have charged a former police officer, Artur K., in connection with the collapsed Zondacrypto exchange, as investigators search the fuel depot where the exchange founder was last seen before vanishing in March 2022, Decrypt reports.
According to the prosecutor-general's organized crime department, the officer was detained by Poland's Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime on Tuesday and faces two counts. The first is participation in an organized criminal group, and the second covers causing large scale property damage to BitBay and BB Trade Estonia, along with allegations that he aided misappropriation of entrusted property, computer fraud, and money laundering.
Prosecutors also said a search of Artur K.'s home turned up documentation related to the exchange's operations. Anna Adamiak, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor-general, said he is currently being questioned as prosecutors consider whether to seek pre-trial detention.
Investigators are also examining the fuel depot where founder Sylwester Suszek was last seen, working with prosecutors, expert witnesses, and specialized forensic equipment. The case file treats Suszek's situation as unlawful deprivation of liberty rather than a disappearance, and earlier allegations include removing a hard drive from a filling station CCTV recorder.
