OpenAI cuts GPT-6 Sol and Luna API prices 50% after Anthropic launch
API input and output token prices for GPT-6 Sol and Luna were cut in half versus GPT-5.6 promotional rates, with Sol priced at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.
OpenAI launched two new models, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, on Tuesday, releasing them minutes after Anthropic introduced Claude Opus 5.5.
OpenAI positioned Sol and Luna as lower-cost, faster options below its top-tier GPT-6 Astra, built for everyday work and intended to follow a similar tiering approach Anthropic has used with its own model lineup.
According to Decrypt, OpenAI also adjusted pricing to stay competitive, cutting API costs for both Sol and Luna by 50% versus GPT-5.6 promotional rates per token. Sol now costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, down from $4 and $20, while Luna drops to $0.1 per million input tokens and $0.5 per million output tokens, down from $0.2 and $1.2.
OpenAI’s case for the updates cites performance benchmarks for AI agents. Decrypt reports that, on AutomationBench using Zapier’s workflow test with 47 tools, GPT-6 Sol scored a 33.2% pass rate at its highest reasoning setting, and on Agents' Last Exam it scored 56.4% at its highest effort, which OpenAI said comes at a 60% lower cost per task than Claude Opus 5.
