Zcash NU7 upgrade plan would make legacy Sprout ZEC unspendable
The NU7 change would stop accepting the older transaction format, affecting only ZEC held in the legacy Sprout shielded pool, with a possible recovery left uncertain.
Cointelegraph reports that Zcashs planned NU7 upgrade could freeze ZEC held in the network legacy Sprout shielded pool by disabling version 4 transactions that allow spending those funds.
Under Zcash Improvement Proposal-2003, Zcash would stop accepting the older transaction format at NU7 activation, which would leave ZEC left in the Sprout pool unspendable after the upgrade. The proposal would not burn Sprout funds, but it warns that access could potentially never be restored.
Zcash users are urged to move any Sprout holdings before the upgrade to avoid losing the ability to spend them. A forum user also encouraged holders to check old wallets for Sprout ZEC, transparent ZEC, or both, noting that only funds in the Sprout pool would be restricted.
NU7 is scheduled to activate on testnet on Oct. 6, and Zcash expects to decide on Oct. 20 whether to proceed with a targeted Nov. 5 mainnet activation. Cointelegraph adds that the upgrade would also cut Zcash target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds while preserving the networks halving schedule.
