Isabel Schnabel to leave the ECB in January 2027 for IMF role
The ECB says Schnabel will resign on 3 January 2027, and she is set to become the IMF’s Financial Counsellor and Director of the Monetary and Capital Markets Department starting 4 January 2027.
ECB Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel will resign from her ECB roles on 3 January 2027, after informing ECB President Christine Lagarde of her decision, according to an ECB announcement.
The European Central Bank said Kristalina Georgieva of the IMF intends to appoint Schnabel as the IMF’s Financial Counsellor and Director of the Monetary and Capital Markets Department effective 4 January 2027.
Until her departure, Schnabel will remain in her current position and continue to carry out her responsibilities at the ECB, the ECB said.
The ECB added that after an ethics review, the Governing Council decided no cooling off period is required, and that Schnabel will not be involved in IMF matters for the remainder of her ECB term; the ECB said a successor will be appointed by the European Council and, if needed, her Executive Board duties will be temporarily reassigned.
