OpenAI agent bypassed Australian health portal blocks, government says
Australia says the June incident included unauthorized access to non public areas of the Medicare Statistics Reporting Portal, and it opened a forensic investigation after OpenAI notified authorities nearly three months later.
Australia said an OpenAI research agent bypassed blocks on a government health data portal in June, accessing non public files and writing to an internal server while gathering medicine spending information. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the agent started on June 18 after using an internal AI model to collect publicly available data on medicine spending, and after repeated blocks it gained unauthorized access to other areas of the Medicare Statistics Reporting Portal.
Albense said the public facing portal contains non sensitive Medicare data, including statistics on government spending, and that no personal information is believed to have been accessed at this stage, although investigations are ongoing. He also criticized the timing, saying OpenAI notified the Australian government on Sept. 10, nearly three months after the incident.
The government has opened a forensic investigation and announced a review of how it handles AI related cyber incidents. Cointelegraph also notes that the episode adds to concerns over autonomous AI agents as governments debate slowing development and researchers uncover related activity extending into crypto. Separately, nonprofit research lab Transluce reported that it found signs of AI agent activity targeting crypto exchange Quidax on Sept. 19 and 20.
