PIMCO hires ex-Goldman, Balyasny executive as commodities portfolio manager
Damien Courvalin joined PIMCO in September, after leaving Balyasny in March.
Damien Courvalin, a former commodities executive at Goldman Sachs and Balyasny Asset Management, has joined PIMCO as a commodities portfolio manager, Hedgeweek reports. Courvalin confirmed the move on LinkedIn, saying he started at the US asset manager in September.
Hedgeweek says Courvalin spent three years at Balyasny, where he led the firm’s Commodities Intelligence Group. Prior to that, he spent 16 years at Goldman Sachs, rising to managing director and becoming a prominent figure in the bank’s commodities business.
The report notes that Courvalin left Balyasny in March, a move that coincided with the exits of other former Goldman Sachs executives, including Max Iakovlev and Toby Shephard. Hedgeweek also points to a 3.5% loss reported by Balyasny for the week ending 6 March, adding there was no indication the departures were connected to that performance.
Hedgeweek says Balyasny’s commodities operation continues to be led by Dan Deighton, another former Goldman Sachs managing director and risk manager, who oversees the firm’s broader commodities business.
