China warns against AI rivalry turning into a cold war

China and the United States should work to prevent their growing AI competition from escalating into a broader cold war, a top Chinese policy adviser cautioned ahead of the Xi-Trump summit in Washington, according to SCMP Economy.

SCMP Economy reports that Zheng Yongnian, a political scientist and dean of the school of public policy at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, said complete decoupling in AI would be difficult.

Zheng also argued that current rules governing emerging AI are shaped largely by global power dynamics, and he said China’s AI development role makes the United States’ position “indispensable.”
