Rightward shift in Europe 2027 flagged as France election key risk

Standard Chartered warns a far-right RN win in France would be market negative, amid potential conservative and populist-right gains across major EU elections.

Standard Chartered says Europe’s political balance could shift to the right in 2027, pointing to key elections in France, Spain, Italy, and Poland. The bank highlighted France’s presidential race as the most critical event for markets, warning that a rightward outcome could be market negative.

The newsletter also argues that gains by conservative and populist-right forces could reshape EU institutions and tighten constraints around climate, migration, and trade policy, according to FXStreet.

In FX market updates accompanying the political view, FXStreet noted AUD/USD is turning lower toward 0.7000 after mixed Australian August jobs data, with the unemployment rate rising to 4.6% from 4.5% expected, while employment change came in at 39.5K.

FXStreet also reported the Bank of Japan raised its short-term interest-rate target to 1.25% from 1.00% in a 7-2 vote, while traders remained cautious ahead of a Trump-Xi meeting, with gold staying under negative pressure below the $4,300 level.
