US initial jobless claims edged down to 197,000 in the week ending September 19, slightly below expectations of 200,000, according to data summarized by Action Forex.
The prior week’s initial claims figure was revised up to 198,000 from 196,000, but the four-week moving average still declined from 204.0k to 202.25k, pointing to layoffs remaining contained.
Continuing claims rose marginally from 1.717 million to 1.719 million in the week ending September 12, while the insured unemployment rate held at 1.1%. The four-week average of continuing claims fell from 1.757 million to 1.744 million, suggesting no broad deterioration in benefit exits.
