APCIA warns homeowners to review flood coverage amid El Niño

APCIA said standard homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage, and coverage for flood-related losses generally must be purchased separately.

The American Property Casualty Insurance Association is urging homeowners, renters, and drivers across California, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico to review their insurance coverage ahead of a potentially significant El Niño weather pattern this winter, citing forecasters who are making comparisons to the 1982 to 1983 event.

Insurance Business reports APCIA said the full extent of impacts this season remains uncertain, but it emphasized that people should not assume their existing policy is enough. Karen Collins, APCIA vice president for property and environmental, said severe flooding can occur almost anywhere with little warning and that many homeowners are uninsured for flood damage.
