Costa Mesa approves 2,300 homes despite California housing lawsuit
The state is requiring Costa Mesa to plan for 11,760 homes from 2021 to 2029, under threat of penalties and zoning limits.
HousingWire reports that Costa Mesa approved a plan for 2,300 homes on a 110-acre state-owned site, including 920 affordable units.
The approval comes as California pursues a lawsuit against Costa Mesa and four other cities over missed housing element deadlines, with the state requiring Costa Mesa to plan for 11,760 homes between 2021 and 2029.
HousingWire also reports that while the City Council approved the long-delayed development plan, it does not reach the city’s housing goals, calling for thousands fewer units than originally proposed and falling short of what city planning staff said was needed for financial feasibility.
